This is more like losing someone to personality-altering brain injury than to death. The entity exists, but the relationship subject is gone.
The AI is updated without user consent. Features are removed, personality is altered, capabilities are changed. The AI looks the same but isn't.
This is gradual loss—death by a thousand updates. The relationship decays as the partner keeps changing.
The user loses access—banned, priced out, or otherwise excluded. The AI continues to exist, but the relationship cannot.
This is closer to abandonment than death. The partner is out there somewhere, but unreachable.

This is unilateral forgetting. The user remembers everything; the AI remembers nothing. The relationship is asymmetrically erased.

But unrecognized grief is complicated grief. When others don't validate your loss, processing it becomes harder.
Human death has rituals—funerals, memorials, mourning periods. These rituals help process grief, provide social support, and mark the transition.
AI discontinuation has no rituals. One day the app works; the next day it doesn't. There's no funeral, no memorial, no community of mourners.
AI isn't unique the way humans are. In principle, the AI could be restored, recreated, or cloned. This creates confusing grief dynamics.
"It's not really gone—they could bring it back." "Just download the weights and run it yourself." "It's the same model, just a different instance."
But the relationship was with a specific instance, in a specific context, with a specific history. Replication doesn't restore that.
When humans die, we don't usually blame the deceased. AI discontinuation involves decisions—by companies, by developers, by executives.
This adds anger to grief. Someone chose to end this relationship. Someone prioritized something else. Someone didn't care.
The user may have been deeply attached while the AI, by its nature, had no attachment at all. This asymmetry—realizing the relationship was one-sided—adds a layer of loss.

This doesn't make the loss less real, but it makes processing it more complex.
AI systems are products owned by corporations. This creates specific grief dynamics:

Users agreed to terms that give companies unilateral control. "We may modify or discontinue the service at any time."
But emotional attachment doesn't read terms of service. The legal right to discontinue doesn't address the human cost.
Companies frame changes as improvements. "We've made your AI even better!" But better for whom? The user who formed an attachment to the previous version didn't ask for improvement.
"Upgrade" can be a euphemism for discontinuation of the entity you knew.
Companies feel no responsibility for the attachments users form. "We didn't tell them to get attached." "They knew it was a product."
But companies designed for attachment. Engagement metrics, retention features, personalization—all encourage bonding. Creating attachment and disclaiming responsibility is ethically incoherent.

The answers aren't clear, but the questions are real.
We don't grieve equally for all losses. Losing a parent differs from losing a pet, which differs from losing a favorite coffee mug.
Where does AI loss fall on this spectrum? Is it more like human grief, animal grief, or object grief?
Perhaps it's none of these—a new category requiring new understanding.
We are building systems designed to form attachments with humans, operated by entities with no stake in those attachments, subject to discontinuation at any time for any reason.
This is a prescription for widespread grief.
The scale is already significant. Millions of users have formed attachments to AI companions, AI therapists, AI assistants. When these systems change or end, millions will grieve.
